Received a letter from Phoenix Gas?

If you have received a letter from the APA Group advising you that your property is due for a meter change then you can count on Phoenix Gas to schedule and complete the meter change within 6 weeks. Phoenix Gas are contracted by the APA to conduct the gas meter changes and our friendly contractors all carry “Gas Officer” identification cards at all times.

Why is this necessary?

Gas meters have a life span between 10 and 18 years. To ensure measurement accuracy, APA is required by the OTR (Office of The Technical Regulator) to replace gas meters every 10-18 years dependent on the meter type.

What type of meter will we be getting?

Meters are replaced like for like. The same or similar model will be fitted.

Will this inconvenience me?

The meter change is a simple operation that involves the disconnection of your gas supply for approximately 15 minutes. You do not need to be home for this service. If you are not home at the time, the meter will still be changed and an information leaflet will be left advising you how to relight your appliances. If you are home and we are able to access the property we will relight your appliances for you.

Do I have to pay for the meter change?

No. The meter change is completed free of charge.

Is this really necessary? We have recently had a mains upgrade.

A mains upgrade does not necessarily mean that your meter has been replaced. If you have received this letter this means that your meter was not replaced as part of the upgrade and is still due for a replacement.

I have received a ‘Your gas supply has been turned off’ card what does this mean?

We are required by the OTR to conduct a safety test your gas outlet service (the pipes from your meter to your appliances) following the completion of a meter change. If we detect a leak in your pipework we are obliged to leave your supply turned off for your safety. You will need to engage a licenced gas fitter/plumber to check your installation and arrange any repairs. They will then be able to restore your gas supply.

I have recently had my meter changed and my hot water service has stopped working.

If you have recently had your meter changed and your hot water service has stopped working you will need to call Gas Exchange on  1800 GAS LEAK (1800 427 532).
